  1. Language 9 Independent Novel Competition2014/15

  2. Purpose • The purpose of the Independent Novel Project is for each student to read AT LEAST 1 novel per term while in Language 9. • This project is done to allow each student the opportunity show their understanding of the novel they read.

  3. General info • It is up to each individual student to choose a novel they will read during each term of L9. Time will be provided to browse the LMTC for a novel. Students may also bring in a novel they have at home, but it must not be a novel that is already, or nearly, completed. • Each L9 teacher has final say in whether or not a novel is acceptable for this project.

  4. General Info [cont’d] • Each L9 class will be given most of the hour on Friday’s to silently read their choice novels. This time will be spent on reading and reading only. • If a student forgets their novel on Friday, they will still be required to find something else to read. • Students should also bring their choice novels to class during the rest of the week in case there is leftover time in class to read.

  5. RUles • This will be a competition amongst L9 classes. • The competition will take place amongst the L9 sections of each individual L9 teacher. For example: • Mr. Odden’s L9 sections will compete against his other L9 sections • Mrs. Toltzman’s L9 sections will compete against her other L9 sections • Etc. • The winning sections from each L9 teacher will be awarded the right to bring in food/beverages during a film later in the term. Mrs. T will bring brownies for all! • The winning section will be determined by the number of novels read per student, not as a class overall due to discrepancies in class sizes.

  6. Rules [Cont’d] • Every other week or so a novel check will occur during class – on Tuesdays mainly. • Students will set up a Google doc that they will then share with their teacher. • During these novel checks a few prompts will be given to students. Each student will then choose a prompt and respond accordingly. These will be graded. • This Google doc will be a running log throughout the entire year. If a student changes teachers after a term, they will simply add their new teacher to the doc; not start a whole new one.

  7. Points • Points will be kept track of by each individual L9 teacher and displayed within the room. • Once a student finishes a novel, they can earn a point for their class by alerting their L9 teacher they have finished a novel. • The L9 teacher will then ask the student a series of questions about that novel in order to verify that the student did in fact read the novel and not just the synopsis on sparknotes. • Students can schedule a time to go through these questions with the teacher before or after school or approach them on Fridays during silent reading time. • Once verified, a point will be added to the class count.

  8. Final Thoughts • CHOOSE A NOVEL THAT IS INTERESTING AND ENJOYABLE TO READ!!! • Fridays will be extremely boring if the book isn’t interesting or enjoyable. • Ask the teacher for book recommendations. Ask the librarians for recommendations. Ask friends for recommendations. Just ask, OK? • Have fun with this!
