Applying for scholarships – practicalities • Obtain application forms from the web/ dept/external organisation • Read the regulations – eligibility, criteria, etc • Provide only information asked for • Download forms and enter required information • Referees reports • UC academic transcripts will be added to any applications handled by Scholarships Office • Submit application on time!

Awards for postgraduate study: UoC • Brownlie Scholarship - $26,000 per EFTS • Roper Scholarship in Science - $25,500 per EFTS • Canterbury Scholarships - $25,000 per EFTS • International Doctoral Scholarships - $25,000 per EFTS + return airfares • Doctoral Scholarships - $20,000 per EFTS • Masters Scholarships - $10,000 per EFTS • Doctoral/Masters Students with Disabilities Scholarships – same values but longer terms All normally non-taxable and include domestic tuition fees
Awards for postgraduate study -UoC Doctoral/Masters Scholarships • Applications close 15 October (or 15 May) • Programme Director/Head of Department comment and decide if supported • Faculties rank supported applications • Postgraduate Committee decides awards • Notification prior to Christmas • Requirements for accepting and enrolling: - Masters: accept by 15 Feb, & take up by 31 March - Doctoral: accept within month, & take up by 1 June • Payments cannot begin before 1 January
UoC Doctoral Scholarships -tenure and value • Available for part time and full time study • EFTS-based tenure (3.00 EFTS) • Maximum of 3 years for full time study • Maximum of 4 years 7 months for part time study • $20,000 per EFTS + domestic tuition fees • $1666.66 per month for full time enrolment • $1083.33 per month for part time enrolment • May apply twice only
UoC Doctoral Scholarships -eligibility criteria (15 Oct round) • Must be eligible to enrol for PhD by 10 December • Confirmed grades (including Master’s thesis grades) must be submitted by 10 December • Transfer to PhD from Masters must be completed by 10 December, unless a qualifying degree held • Students requiring admission ad eundem statum must gain approval by 10 December • May be already enrolled in PhD but normally only in 1st or 2nd year
UoC Masters Scholarships -tenure and value • Available for part time and full time study for thesis/creative work/research of at least .75 EFTS • EFTS-based tenure (1.00 EFTS) • Maximum of 1 year for full time study • Maximum of 18 months for part time study • $10,000 per EFTS + domestic tuition fees • $833.33 per month for full time enrolment • $541.67 per month for part time enrolment • May apply once only for the same degree
UoC Masters Scholarships -eligibility criteria (15 Oct round) • Must be eligible to enrol for Masters by 10 December • Confirmed grades for qualifying courses must be submitted by 10 December • Students requiring admission ad eundem statum must gain approval by 10 December • BE(Hons) practical work must be credited by following 1 June
UCi3 Scholarships • Established in 2007 on behalf of sponsors of ICT Innovation Institute (UCi3) • Encouraging research relevant to general field of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) • In conjunction with a company or with intention of developing/commercialising product • Human interface technology, nanotechnology, bioengineering, wireless communications, database applications, geospatial www.UCi3.com
UCi3 Scholarships • Masters • $30,000 (tuition inclusive) for 1 year • Applications close 15 Oct, Nov, Feb and May • PhD • $30,000 per annum (tuition inclusive) for 3 years • Applications close 15 Oct, Nov, Feb and May • Research Awards • Top up emolument of another scholarship • Normally up to $5,000 per annum for 1-3 years • Apply anytime

Technology in Industry Fellowships • TIFs are administered by FRST/Research Office • Masters Fellowship (including postgraduate diplomas) • PhD Fellowship • Industry provides facilities, mentor etc • IN industry - exposing the student to realities of developing technology in a commercial environment • Available for science, engineering or technology research • Preference to NZ citizens or permanent residents
Technology in Industry Fellowships TIF Education • Masters = $20,000 to student + $1,000 accommodation/travel, $5,000 to institution • PhD = $25,000 to student + $1,000 accommodation/travel, $5,000 to institution (x3) • At least 50% of time required in the business • Commercial focus required of project www.frst.govt.nz
Bright Futures Scholarships • Bright Futures Scholarships are administered by Tertiary Education Commission/Scholarships Office • Top Achiever Doctoral (PhD) • Enterprise (3rd-4th year, Honours, Masters, PhD) • Institute provides facilities, mentor, etc • FOR industry - rewarding achievement of students, usually in conjunction with industry • Available to NZ citizens or permanent residents or Australian citizens
Bright Futures Scholarships Top Achiever Doctoral Scholarship • Top achieving student (A to A+) • $25,000, domestic fees + $3,000 conference attendance for up to 3 years • At NZ or overseas university • Two rounds each year (closing April/May and December)
Bright Futures Scholarships Enterprise Scholarship • Excellent student (minimum B- grade) • Full-time or part-time study, min of 20% research component • 50% funds from govt and 50% from enterprise • Monthly application rounds • Capped: $25,000 PhD $20,000 Masters $15,000 Hons, diploma or certificate www.tec.govt.nz

Te Tipu Putaiao Fellowships • Support science, technology and engineering students to develop expertise and Maori knowledge research capability • Research proposals must demonstrate relevance and contribution to specified research themes. • Value: • PhD $25,000 x 3 years + $12,500 expenses +fees • MSc $20,000 x 2 years + $3,500 expenses + fees • Approximately 17 Fellowships available www.frst.govt.nz
