Abraham grew up in the midst of superstition and heathenism.
His father’s household served other gods, although they had a knowledge of the true God.
Terah had three sons--Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Lot was the son of Haran, but Haran died before his father, Terah, died. Terah, Abram, and Lot left Ur of the Chaldees.

“Get thee out of thy country.” • He had to be separated from the associations of his early life in order for God to qualify him as a keeper of the sacred oracles. • The influence of kindred and friends would interfere with the training which the Lord wanted give him. • Abraham could not explain his course of action so as to be understood by his friends. His motives and actions were not comprehended by his idolatrous kindred. • Strong ties bound him to his country, kindred, and home.

Abram was . . . • faithful among the faithless • and uncorrupted by the prevailing apostasy, • and he steadfastly adhered to the worship of the one true God.
And God . . . • communicated his will to Abraham, • gave him a distinct knowledge of the requirements of his law and of the salvation that would be accomplished through Christ, • and gave him the promise, precious above every other promise given him, that the Redeemer would be come of his line.
We may not hear the voice of God speaking as he did with Abraham, but God calls us through the teachings of his word and from the events of his providence.
