  4. Where we stand. • U.S. is the lowest ranking in graduation rates when compared to Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Canada. • U.S. is lowest at 77.5% (Education at a Glance 2009 : OECD indicators, OECD, Paris, 2009. www.oecd.org/edu/eag2009)

Why a Technology Plan? “Technology is at the core of virtually every aspect of our daily lives and work, and we must leverage it to provide engaging and powerful learning experiences and content, as well as resources and assessments that measure student achievement in more complete, authentic, and meaningful ways.” Retrieved from The National Education Technology Plan http://www.ed.gov/technology/netp-2010

  6. What is a technology plan? A technology plan is a set of standards that the government, individual states, and/or a school district set, to create a goal as to where student’s technology proficiency should be when they leave high school and move on to college and/or the job market.

Today’s goals. • Understand why we have a technology plan. • Review Corpus Christi ISD’s technology plan. • Compare it to the national technology plan • Discuss recommendations. * You should have each received a copy of the district technology plan to follow along. Please raise your hand if you do not have one and will bring one to you.

  8. CCISD Technology Plan Overview • Broken down into 9 Goals. • Each goal has several Objectives. • All Objectives feature strategies to complete objectives. • All but one Objective are funded. • The plan also list the budget for each area.

  9. Goal 1 • All students will have equal opportunity to meat standards set forth in Technology TEKS • Objective 1 addresses Grades K-8 • Objective 2 addresses Grades 9-12 • Each provides strategies for District Leadership, Administrators, and Teachers to ensure goals are met

Goal 2 • The District will provide trained personnel for the effective implementation of instructional technology. • Broken down into 3 Objectives. • Each Objective is more specific as to types of training and how to be used. • All teachers and staff will have training to master technology provided by CCISD. • Please note this section also states the district will provide evening and Saturday training for staff and parents to utilize eChalk and other district wide management systems.

  11. Goal 3 • The District will provide staff and students proper hardware and software to complete the District Technology Plan. • 3 objectives with several strategies for fulfilling listed in each. • Note: Objective three is in relation to test pilot program and does not have funding yet.

  12. Goal 4 • The District will provide staff development opportunities that increases student achievement and allows teachers and staff to master hardware and software. • Broken down into 4 objectives. Provides staff development opportunities to all teachers, staff, and advanced training for Technology Department training staff.

  13. Goal 5 • The District will effectively utilize Distributed Learning Technologies to impact learning. • Broken into 3 objectives with several strategies to fulfill each. • Ensures the district makes use of distance education and 24/7 online access to parents, teachers, students, and staff • Supports virtual field trips.

  14. Goal 6 • Ensures all district personnel and parents will have access to proper hardware and software for financial and student management. • 1 Objective with 2 strategies listed.

  15. Goal 7 • The District will improve communication with parents, teachers, and support staff through updated technology. • District will continually update eChalk so parents can monitor student progress, view classroom lesson plans, and maintain good communication with teachers.

  16. Goal 9 • The District will provide additional infrastructure and support to meet goals set forth in the District Technology Plan.

Goal 8 • The District will increase efficiency and improve operating cost through use of technology. • 1 objective with several strategies listed. • Goal covers purchasing better surveillance systems for buses, schools, and offices. • Moving files to online archiving instead of paper filing. • Updated inventory tracking software.

National Technology Plan • “The challenge for our education system is to leverage the learning sciences and modern technology to create engaging, relevant, and personalized learning experiences for all learners that mirror students' daily lives and the reality of their futures. Does CCISD make the grade? • Yes • eChalk • Internet in all schools. • Computer labs in all schools. • Incorporating technology in to core subject areas. • Technology needed for support and communication. • No • 3 Technology Facilitators for over 50 schools • Lack of professional development opportunities and funding to support.

  20. Recommendations • Get creative in Funding. • Look for Technology sponsors. • Research free software and open source software. • Research ideas on how to use existing software more efficiently. • Invest more into our technology department. • More Technology Facilitators helping teachers. • Increased opportunities for professional development related to technology.
