  5. How do young people use mobile phones

  6. Mobile Phones-the risks • Web Access • Bullying • Sexting • Lack of supervision • High Mobile Phone Bills!

  7. How can you reduce the risks? • Pay-as-you-go mobiles limit the number of calls and texts that can be used • Monitor the activity on the mobile • Encourage your child to show you how the mobile works

  8. Social Networking • Sites that help connect friends using a number of tools like blogs, profiles, e-mails, photos and videos

  9. What are the dangers? • Over 100,000 children illicitly using these sites in the UK • The biggest danger is children giving out personal information • They can’t see who they are speaking to • They have no way of knowing if the person they are talking to is lying to them • They think they are invincible online

More than 500 million users worldwide • 1 in 3 people on earth have used Facebook • 23.5 million users in the UK • 50% of these users log on every day • 150 million users access Facebook via their mobile phones • 2.7 million photographs uploaded every 20 minutes • 10.2 million comments made every 20 minutes • In total,users are on Facebook for an average of 700 billion minutes per month

  12. Online Grooming Sexual Offences (Scotland) Act 2009 covers a number of offences relating to grooming including - Sending sexual written communication by whatever means Sending sexual images to children

Case Study • January 2010 • 2 x 15 year old girls from Sanquhar communicating with a 30 year old male on MSN • After 3 months the male travelled from Canada to meet the girls • Hotel room booked in Glasgow • Travelled from Glasgow to meet the girls at a nearby Railway Station • Police made aware and he was detained. • Following a court case he was sentenced to 16 months in Prison and placed on the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years • Canadian authorities are looking into similar cases

Protecting Children Using Social Networking Sites • Encourage them to only upload pictures that you as their parents would be happy to see • Don’t post phone numbers or e-mail addresses on their homepage • Help your child to adjust their account settings so that only approved friends can instant message them • Check that the privacy settings have been changed to suit your child • Encourage them not to give too much away in a blog • Ask them to show you how to use these sites. They will know far more than you!!!!!!

  15. Basic Computer Safety • Learn as much as possible about what your child does online • Ask your child to show you what they typing and who they are talking to • Check the history on the computer, if it has been deleted ask why • Look out for changes in your child that might indicate a problem
