Battle of Gonzales • In 1831 the Mexican Government gave the settlersof Gonzales, Texas a very small cannon to protect themselves from Comanche raids. • In early 1835, the Mexican Commander,Colonel Domingo de Ugartechea, sent • 100 mounted soldiers (called Dragoons) to take the cannon back from the settlers.
Battle of Gonzales • On September 29, 1835, the Mexican Soldiers arrived in Gonzales to take the cannon, but the settlers refused to give the cannon back. • Within 2 days, 140 Texans arrived inGonzales determined NOT to give upthe cannon. • The settlers voted on October 1, 1835 to initiate the fight the next day.
Battle of Gonzales • The Battle of Gonzales begins in the early hours (around 6:00 am) of October 2, 1835. • During the fighting, the Mexican commander and the Texans commander met for a “parley.” • The parley was unsuccessful and the battle continued.
Battle of Gonzales • The Texas created a white flag that had a picture of a cannon with the words “COME AND TAKE IT” • During the battle only 1 Mexican Soldier died and No Texans died.
Battle of Gonzales • After the brief battle, the Mexican troops were ordered to withdraw to San Antonio. • The Texans claimed a victory!
Battle of Gonzales • Most historians consider the Battle of Gonzales more of a skirmish rather than a battle. • However all historians agree that the Battle of Gonzales was the definitive start to the Texas Revolution. Thanks Mr. Pina! We couldn’t have won without you!
