A World in Trouble Is the End of the World Near?
A World in Trouble • Overpopulation • Water shortages • Global Warming • Earthquakes & Natural Disasters • Famine & Starvation • Global Financial Instability • Nuclear Proliferation
Overpopulation The world’s population is now more than 6.8 billion and continues to grow by 83 million people per year. During the last half-century, the world’s population more than doubled. Between 1960 and 2010, the world population rose from 3 billion to 6.8 billion. In other words, there has been more growth in population in the last fifty years than the previous 6,000 years that humans have existed. Currently the rate of population increase is 1.2% per year, which means the planet’s human population is on a trajectory to double again in 58 years.
Overpopulation • Unfortunately, the earths resources are finite • Food and water resources cannot grow to cater for a growing world population • Here is a world map, showing the places where population growth is greatest…
Population growth is in the worst places! Index = Number of births per woman
Global Warming • Glaciers are melting, sea levels are rising, cloud forests are drying, and wildlife is scrambling to keep pace. It's becoming clear that humans have caused most of the past century's warming by releasing heat-trapping gases as we power our modern lives. Called greenhouse gases, their levels are higher now than in the last 650,000 years. • We call the result global warming, but it is causing a set of changes to the Earth's climate, or long-term weather patterns, that varies from place to place. As the Earth spins each day, the new heat swirls with it, picking up moisture over the oceans, rising here, settling there. It's changing the rhythms of climate that all living things have come to rely upon. • What will we do to slow this warming? How will we cope with the changes we've already set into motion? While we struggle to figure it all out, the face of the Earth as we know it—coasts, forests, farms and snow-capped mountains—hangs in the balance. (www.National Geographic.com)
Global Warming - Effects To Summarise:- • Reduction in habitat of wildlife (polar bears, penguins, etc) • Eventual loss of some species • Rise in air and sea temperatures, leading to climate change & more unpredictable weather, leading to crop reductions worldwide • Rise in sea levels, leading to loss of landmass
Is the End of the World Near? Answer (1): • From a human standpoint, YES! • It only needs a dictator, or leader with sufficient desperation (imagine if Hitler had produced the atom bomb first and was losing the war..) to start a nuclear war. Today this could be North Korea; Pakistan or Iran (?)
Is the End of the World Near? Answer (2) • From the divine standpoint also YES! • Luke 21:24-28 • 2 Peter 3:1-7, 9-13
A World in Trouble The End of the World as we know is indeed near! Will you be ready for it?
