  2. What do we mean by English? • Reading • Speaking & listening • Writing • Spelling

  3. 1. Reading strategies • Phonics – learn 44 sounds • Begin to blend sounds together • Recognise high frequency words • Read to develop skills, accuracy, fluency & expression

  4. Individual Reading • Little & often is essential • KS1 – adults hear child read & record for them • Y3 - Child takes over simple recording based on opening prompts • Y4 – Recording more independent & detailed but still with prompts • Y5/6 – Fully independent, detailed thoughts & observations

  5. Guided Reading • Carousel of activities each week • Pre-reading (individual or group) • Guided discussion of text with an adult • Follow up task – independent • Spelling investigation • All at child’s individual level

  6. A love of reading • OFSTED want schools not just to produce good readers but to inspire children with a love of reading • New books, Library time with Junior Librarians, Book Week, reading challenges, reading to classes, choosing exciting texts to work with etc are some of the ways we do this

  7. 2. Speaking & Listening • Aim: to build confidence, fluency & ability to be succinct • Talk about ideas, texts, views & opinions • Developed through role play, performance & public speaking skills • Rehearse ideas for writing out loud to see if they make sense

  8. 3. Writing • VCOP • Structures of different text types • Language features of different genre • Application

  9. Structure of writing Site of instruction • Skeletons/layout • Language features • Model & construct • Site of application • Real writing across the curriculum • Big writing to sustain writing for a period of time

  10. How do we practise? • Teacher modelling • Think, say, write, read, check process • Guided group work with an adult • Talk partners (pairs)

  11. New Grammar test • From May 2013 a grammar, spelling and punctuation test will be given to all Y6s.

  12. 4. Spelling • Test at beginning of year using Single Word Spelling Test SWST • Level established for individual child • Teach rules & patterns not words • Word walls, mnemonics, spelling logs, dictionaries • KS1 – Letters & Sounds • KS2 – Support for Spelling

  13. How do we learn? • Weekly words to learn + test • Independent investigations/activities • Edit own writing & correct mistakes identified by teacher • Test again at end to measure how much progress has been made
