  2. DEALING WITH: • ALL RAPES - VAGINAL, ANAL, ORAL • MORE SERIOUS CASES OF ASSAULT BY PENETRATION • MORE SERIOUS CASES OF SEXUAL ACTIVITY WITH A CHILD

  3. INITIAL ACTIONS BY POLICE • SPECIALLY TRAINED UNIFORM VLO ASSIGNED TO VICTIM AND TAKES FIRST ACCOUNT AND ORGANISES MEDICAL AND SOCO • ALLOCATED TO A DETECTIVE AND RIU VLO FOR DURATION OF FULL INVESTIGATION

  4. ROLE OF DETECTIVES • OVERSEE FULL INVESTIGATION - PRESENT WHEN VICTIM IS INTERVIEWED, ARREST AND INTERVIEW OFFENDER - CONCLUDING WITH OBTAINING CPS ADVICE AND CROWN COURT • MINIMAL CONTACT WITH VICTIM - ALWAYS SEES VICTIM WITH VLO

ROLE OF VLO • MAKE CONTACT WITH VICTIM AND OFFER SUPPORT FROM OUTSET • EXPLAIN ROLES AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROCEDURES • LIAISE WITH SSD OR OTHER AGENCIES WHERE NECESSARY • INTERVIEW VICTIM (ABE/STATEMENT) • KEEP VICTIM INFORMED OF PROGRESS OF CASE • SUPPORT VICTIM THROUGH COURT PROCESS • MAKE ANY COMPENSATION APPLICATIONS

  6. NUMBER OF CASES • SINCE APRIL 2009 - NEW UNIT - 129 CASES - IN MOST CASES VICTIM KNOWS OFFENDER • HIGH NUMBER OF CASES INVOLVING ALCOHOL AND/OR DRUGS

  7. CONVICTION RATES • RECENT PUBLICITY SHOWS POOR CONVICTION RATES • GIVING EVIDENCE IS NOW MORE TOLERABLE FOR VICTIMS DUE TO SPECIAL MEASURES - HOPEFULLY CONVICTION RATES WILL INCREASE • CLOSE LIAISON WITH CPS BARRISTERS PRIOR TO TRIAL
