SpringBoard Curriculum • Covers all the Common Core Standards. • Various text(including short stories, non-fiction, and full-length novels). • Writing process. • Collaborative learning. • Focuses on the learning process while emphasizing the need to revisit, revise, and reflect. • The Language Arts classes of Broward County utilize the SpringBoard curriculum developed by the College Board in order to better prepare middle school students for high school English, Advanced Placement courses, and ultimately college.
End Result • Support high expectations for all students. • Close the achievement gap. • Focus on critical thinking and reasoning skills. • Provide a seamless grade 6 to 12 program. • Define rigorous academic course work. • Increase the number of students in AP courses; and ensure that every student succeeds in college.
Purpose of the Portfolio • To provide an organized, focused way to view progress throughout the year. • To make learning more significant by encouraging students to reflect on the skills and strategies they have used. • To emphasize the recursive nature of the learning process. • To measure students’ growth as readers, writers, speakers, and performers over the course of the year. • To allow opportunities for the students to revise prior work and incorporate newly acquired skills. • To create a sense of ownership and pride by featuring a variety of student work.
Classroom Expectations • All students are expected to: • Arrive to class on time. • Be seated and working when the bell rings. • Raise your hand and wait to be called on. • Respect your teacher and classmates. • Stay seated until the teacher dismisses you. • Consequences • Verbal warning • Pre-Detention (written warning)/ Phone Call Home • Detention • Pre-referral • Referral
Supplies For Language Arts-Mrs. Basso • 2 duo-tang folders (with pockets & prongs) 1-stays in classroom(portfolio) 1-travels between home/school • Lined paper(no spirals) • Pens(blue & black) /Pencils • Colored pen(red, green, etc) • 2 Highlighters (different colors) • 1 Dry Erase Expo Marker • Post-it Notes(standard size)
Quizzes & Tests • Advance notice will be given for quizzes & tests. • Posted on class website. • Send via text, Remind101 • Reviews and/or study guides will be completed before a test. • Information from quizzes and tests will come directly from class PowerPoints and SpringBoard. • Grammar quiz will be given every Friday.
Homework • Homework will be given, as needed, to reinforce what has been taught in class. • It is important for students to review the notes that they have taken in class and re-read the information we have covered in the textbook.
Late & Make-Up Work Late Work: • Assignments that are late will be dropped one letter grade for each day late, excluding homework. Homework will be accepted the next day for half credit, after it will become a zero. Make-Up Work: • It is each student’s responsibility to make-up work missed due to absences or tardies. They are given two days for every missed day to make-up their work. However, if the assignment was assigned prior to the absence, it is due on the day returned. Students are responsible for checking the website upon their return to class.

Grades and Pinnacle • All grades are weighted into categories. • 40% Tests and Quizzes • 30% Writing/Projects • 20% Classwork • 10% Homework • School Grading Scale: 90-100 A 70-76 C 87-89 B+ 67-69 D+ 80-86 B 60-66 D 77-79 C+ 0-59 F • You can view your child’s grades online at the Pinnacle Internet Viewer. Link on falconcove.net • The Student ID and a Password is needed. • Password = Date of Birth (YYYYMMDD) • Grades are entered intoPinnacle daily and weekly.

Miscellaneous • Rain Gear (umbrella, parka, poncho,etc.) is highly recommended due to unexpected rain showers. • Winter Wear (sweatshirt, jacket) could be helpful since some classrooms get very chilly. • Due to the closest water fountain being in the building, water bottles are welcome in class. • Bathrooms are not right around the corner. Students need to try and go between classes & lunch to ensure they don’t miss out on instructional time.
