Respiratory System Chapter 13: Amelia May Block 3
Function: • To supply oxygen to the blood while removing carbon dioxide. • To oversee gas exchanges that occur between the blood and the external environment.
Organs I: • Nose- Only visible part of the respiratory system. • Air goes in through the nostrils and “swirls” around inside the nose, where particles from the air are trapped by mucus-coated surfaces. • Pharynx- Passageway for food and air. • Air is sent through the nasopharynx to the oropharynx, into the laryngopharynx and into the larynx.
Organs II: • Larynx- “Voice box” • Routes air/food into their proper channels. Epiglottis protects superior aspect of larynx. • When food/ liquids are being swallowed, the larynx extends to the epiglottis, keeping whatever is being swallowed from getting into the lungs. • Trachea- “Windpipe” • Walls are enforced with C-shaped rings. • Open parts allow the esophagus to expand. Solid parts support the trachea and keep it open.
Organs III: • Main Bronchi: Right and left; formed by the division of the trachea. • Branch into secondary, tertiary, etc., bronchi. • Terminal bronchioles break into alveoli. • Lungs: Occupy the entire thoracic cavity except mediastinum. • Narrow, superior portion of the lung is apex; broad area resting on diaphragm is the base. • Left lung has two lobes, right lobe has three.
Diaphragm: • The diaphragm is the main muscle used in breathing, it works with the external intercostals to contract and increase the capacity of the thoracic cavity so that the lungs may expand when breathing.
