Initial Tests on Vacuum Thermogravimetric Apparatus (TGA) at Glenn Research Center Feb 2012 Sample
Macro-View of C-103 Coupon after Exposure to Vacuum at 1600C Appears to show etching and grain boundary attack Possible degradation in mechanical properties Need to examine with electron microscope
Comments on Further Studies • Pushing C-103 to extreme conditions • Initial weight gain on heat-up (condensed phase oxide?) • Then weight loss (vaporization and/or oxygen enhanced vaporization?) • Appears to be some type of vaporization/outgassing • Need to determine if related to oxygen—critical factor with refractory metals • Suggest further TGA tests with zirconia oxygen sensor • Possibly use oxygen getter in furnace • Suggest some mass spectrometer tests to identify vapor species • Post examination of samples with electron microscope • Information on mission parameters • Estimates of oxygen content in space? • How long at highest temperatures?
