5 Minutes to Study for Quiz Review: -counting syllables -word stress for compound words -prefixes/suffixes that do or do not get stress -when a word has a noun & a verb form, what are the rules for stress? -rules for emphatic/contrastive stress -rules for content/function word stress
Quiz • When you are finished, try to write the following words in IPA in your notebook: Ex. Sun /s^n/ • Mop • Onion • Stop 4. Pup 5. Tough Which of these shows emphatic stress & which of these shows contrastive stress? • -Which sentence shows the speaker thinks the test was very, very difficult. • 1a. Question Intonation • Should the pitch of your voice always rise at the end of a sentence when you ask a question? NO!!! • There are 2 types of questions: • WH (who, what, where, when, why, how) • Ex. What are you doing? • Yes/No • Ex. Did you do your homework? (Answer can be yes/no) VOICE FALLS AT THE END VOICE RISES AT THE END

Question Intonation Practice • Ask your classmates questions! • Use the correct intonation. • Wh ?s = FALLING • Yes/No ?s = RISING

Go Fish! • Each person gets cards • Try to get two of the same words • If you have two of the same words put them down • The goal is to get rid of all the cards • Get a match by asking, “Do you have….” • If someone asks you for a card and you don’t have it, say “Go Fish” • If you do have the card they ask for, give it to them • You can ask for one card per turn
