  8. National Engagement Campaign AND YOU!

  9. National Engagement Campaign Goals • Raise awareness among the general public regarding widespread challenges facing veterans and their families. • Inform the general public about veterans’ needs and allow them to immediately join successful efforts that support veterans. • Bring attention to excellent, “best-of-the best” services for veterans and their families and connect them to these services. • Create opportunities for increased collaboration among key stakeholders focused on veterans’ issues and services. • Sustain and enhance the online communities of support.

  10. National Partner Organizations • The Wounded Warrior Project http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/ • Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA)http://iava.org/

  11. National Partner Organizations • ReMind.org http://remind.org/ • Give An Hour (GAH) http://www.giveanhour.org/

  12. Featured National Partner: • About: • 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 2007 • Awards community service fellowships to post 9/11 veterans • Bridges military-civilian divide through local community service projects led by fellows

  13. Special Considerations • Consider the violent nature of the film content and its potential effect on vets suffering from PTSD, as well as civilian audiences; provide appropriate warnings in promotional materials for your screening event. • Engaging veterans effectively around medical and mental health issues requires trained professionals. Make sure to involve appropriate service providers in your engagement efforts. Consider having space available at the venues for audience members, if needed. • Military family members have their own special set of challenges. Make sure to provide support that targets their needs as well. • Take care to treat veterans with respect, not pity. Provide opportunities for self improvement and self expression, not charity. • Be aware of the relationship (or lack thereof) between local and national VA offices – and other federated organizations – as you develop partnerships.

  14. Engagement at Community Cinema Events • Connect veterans and military families with support services at your event: Give An Hour (GAH) has committed to having service providers on hand at Community Cinema events! • Host a hiring fair: collaborate with local business associations and veterans services groups to facilitate free resume reviews, recruitment and employment drive • Organize a care package drive: http://www.ehow.com/how_8301203_organize-care-package-drive.html

  15. Other Potential Partner Organizations • US Chamber of Commerce “Hiring Our Heroes” Initiative: http://www.uschamber.com/hiringourheroes/100-hiring-fairs-veterans-and-spouses • Swords to Ploughshares: http://www.swords-to-plowshares.org/ • YMCA’s Military Outreach: http://ymca.net/military-outreach/ • The Veterans Project: http://www.theveteransproject.org/ • United States Veterans Initiative: http://www.usvetsinc.org/ • Local VA offices: http://www2.va.gov/directory/guide/vetcenter_flsh.asp

  18. Department of Defense statistics indicate that 18 veterans commit suicide every day. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a national unemployment rate of 9.1% for these veterans, down from 15.2% for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans in January 2011.  The national overall rate for January 2012 is reporting at 8.3%. About 300,000 veterans leave the military annually. About 10 to 20 percent of veterans have experienced PTSD from Operation Enduring Freedom Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn.
