Vocabulary: Paragraph 1 • 1 jackpot: the biggest or most expensive prize given in a contest • 2 purchase: when you purchase something, you buy it (a formal use) • 3 luxury: luxury item is something expensive which is not necessary but which gives you pleasure • 4 hit the jackpot: to win the top prize in a contest • 5 strike it rich: to make a lot of money

Vocabulary: Paragraph 2 • 1 affluent: wealthy, prosperous • 2 tricky: if you describe a task or problem as tricky, you mean that it is difficult to do or deal with • 3 employ, employment, employee, employer • 4 accountant: a person who keeps financial records and gives financial advice to a person or company • 5 invest, investment: people use their money in a way that they hope will increase its value

Vocabulary: Paragraph 2 • 6 windfall: sudden good luck, especially unexpected money • 7 counselor: a person whose job is to give advice to people who need it, especially advice on their personal problems • 8 fortune: wealth, riches • 9 sensible: the actions or decisions which are based on reasons rather than emotions • 10 unforeseen: unexpected, happening by accident

Vocabulary: Paragraph 3, 4 and 5 • 1 racetrack: a track for races, especially car or bicycle races; in American English, a racetrack is a track on which horses race • 2 irate: very angry, infuriated, incensed • 3 vehicle: a machine with an engine that carries people or things from place to place • 4 license plate: a sign on the front and back of a vehicle that show its registration number

Vocabulary: Paragraph 3, 4 and 5 • 5 insurance: an arrangement in which you pay money to a company, and they pay money to you if something unpleasant happens to you • 6 ban: to ban something means to state officially that it must not be done, shown or used • 7 extravagant: too generous or expensive

  8. Vocabulary: Paragraph 3, 4 and 5 • 8 violation, violate: if someone violates an agreement, law, or promise, they break it (a formal use) • 9 keep up with: to stay level with • 10 resignation, resign: a formal statement of your intention to leave a job or position

Vocabulary Skill: Definitions • 1 a person who lives or resides in a certain area: resident • 2 pleasing to you: pleasant • 3 when something or someone is unlike another: different • 4 when something is immediate, quick, very fast: instant • 5 a place where people go to eat meal: restaurant • 6 empty, unoccupied: vacant • 7 an unfortunate happening, a mishap: accident • 8 a happening or occurrence: event
