Standards • SC.912.N.2.1 – Identify what is science and what is not science, and what superficially resembles science but fails to meet the criteria for science. • SC.912.N.2.2 – Identify which questions can be answered through science and which questions are outside the boundaries of scientific investigation, such as questions addressed by art, philosophy and religion.

  3. Kinds of Information • Quantitative Information – Numerical data • May be used to make a graph or table • The data are analyzed by comparing numerical values.

  4. Qualitative Information • Purely observational data • Written descriptions of what scientists observe. • NOT numerical – defined by words

  5. Can Science Answer all Questions? • Some questions are out of the realm of science • Some questions can not be tested using scientific methods. • Take a couple minutes in your group and come up with three questions that science cannot answer. Be prepared to discuss.

  6. Can Technology Solve all Problems? • Science attempts to explain how and why things happen. • Scientific study that is carried out mainly for the sake of knowledge is called pure science. • Technology – is the application of scientific research to society’s needs and problems. • It is concerned with making improvements in human life and the world around us. • What are some examples of how technology has improved our lives?

  8. Technology • Science and technology will never answer all of the questions we ask. • However, you can use the process of science to ask and answer questions about the world.

  9. Homework / Classwork • Section Assessment #’s 1 – 6 • Group A has #1, B #2, D #3, E #4 and all groups have number 5 and 6. • We will share our answers, so become an expert on your question!
