What is geothermal energy? • The word geothermal comes from the Greek words “geo” (earth) and “therme” (heat) • Geothermal energy is thermal energy from the Earth • Geothermal energy is renewable because there will always be heat producing in the Earth The center of the Earth is believed to be 5,500 degrees Celcius. Almost as hot as the surface of the sun!
Where is it located? • Large areas of naturally occurring hydrothermal resources are called geothermal reservoirs • They are deep underground with no clues above ground • Sometimes it finds ways up near the crust in forms of: • Volcanoes and fumaroles • Hot Springs • Geyers Volcanic activity occurring around the Pacific rim
How do we get it? Hot rocks underground heats water in the Earth. The water turns to steam. The steam drives the turbines which drives the electric generators. ]
Use The three main uses of geothermal energy: • Geothermal heat pumps • Electricity generation power plants • Direct use and district heating system We can use geothermal energy for: • Hot water for showering in hot springs • Heating buildings through district heating system • Gold mining • Milk pasteurizing • The most common: food dehydration- the drying of food products
Why use it? • Since there will always be heat producing in the Earth, using some of it would not change anything, so why not? It does not pollute the air, has almost no negative impact on the Earth, and does not use fuel. It's also clean and sustainable. If all the other types of energy run out, there will still be heat from the Earth, so there will always be geothermal energy!
Facts • The United States of America is the leader in Geothermal Power Generation • Types of power plants: • Dry plants • Flash steam • Binary Cycle • Geothermal energy has been in existence for over hundreds of years • The first time geothermal energy was used in the U.S was in 1893.
Who uses it? • Farmers use it to grow vegetables in the winter • Many people use it to heat buildings and homes • Geothermal energy is used in fishing farms. The warm water increases the growth of the animals • In the future….. everyone!!!!!!!!!
