PFP Mechanical Peer Review SWEA Design Loads Paul Turin, LME 2010 May 10
Existing STEREO Analysis Is STEREO analysis and design adequate for MAVEN environment? For STEREO design load of 30g, the worst case MoS was .37 for yield and .41 for ultimate:
MAVEN MAC Limit Loads • MAVEN MAC limit load = 48g +1.5g thrust load =49.5g • 65% higher! • Calculated the same way, MAVEN SWEA MoS will be negative! • It was hoped that the coupled loads analysis would provide relief; but not enough MAVEN MAC curve 1.62
MAVEN Design loads • What alternate methods of analysis are acceptable? • LM practice: Design loads are to be calculated by Either: 1) Analyze using MAC loads + 1.5g SS load with the MAC SF if not testing, w/o if testing. Random vibe is considered an adequate test. Or: 2) Analyze to protoflight random levels (x 3 sigma) w/o SFs, or to acceptance levels (x 3 sigma) x random SFs. • GSFC practice for random (wants instead of 2 above): 3) Run Miles equation on protoflight random levels, x 3sigma x random SFs
Include Balance Mass For LM (case 1) SWEA will be mounted on the spacecraft balance mass attached to the end of the SWEA boom. This mass can be considered in calculating the MAC limit load. Current predict is 20kg, expected minimum is 10kg 29g MAC load However, must use the higher random safety factors 11.6
Calculate Limit Load for GSFC Random (case 3) Use Miles equation to generate response using STEREO first-mode frequency of 112Hz and a 3 sigma peak response factor: Response = 24.6grms
Calculate Design Loads LM MAC method: GSFC random method:
