Hand in W.S. “Homeostasis and transport” before the bell rings Please do not hand in the lab “Eggsperiment” Chapter 4 Quiz 1 Notes – Chapter 4 Active Transport “Man’s mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.” Oliver Wendell Holmes To complete the eggsperiment, assess knowledge gained about passive transport and learn about active transport. Title: Biology 11/10/06 Class Topics Objectives: Monday, January 6, 20208:50 AM
Miscellaneous • Do not assume I will be available for help after school • Before school I will still be available • If I’m not in my room, check other places! • I will be available during homeroom • Check with me about after school time • Review times can be arranged ahead of time
Eggsperiment • Determine a range for the percentage of water and the percentage of solute in your egg. • Explain how you determined this • Write a description of how you could find the exact percentage of water and solute in your egg. Hand in the ‘Eggsperiment’

Postquiz Activities • Hand in quiz • Pick up “Active Transport” handout • Read 81-86
Ion Channels(a type of facilitated diffusion) • Transport proteins have polar channels for the important ions to pass • Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Cl- • Fig 3 • Used in maintaining electrical charge or nerve cells
Active Transport • Using energy to move particles across the cell membrane - through an transport protein (pump) • Usually against the concentration gradient - like going up a hill • Ex. glucose into liver and muscle cells for storage • from a low concentration in the bloodstream to a high concentration in the cells
Sodium-Potassium Pumpfigure 5 • Found in nerve cells • Pumps 3 Na+ out of the cell and 2 K+ into the cell • Both against their concentration gradient

Bulk Transport • Also known as cytosis • Uses cell energy (active transport) • Moving large particles - larger than integral proteins - into or out of the cell • Endocytosis – into the cell • Exocytosis- out of the cell

Exocytosis • Excretion • release waste • Secretion • release products • enzymes, carbohydrates, or hormones made by the cell
Membrane Receptor Proteins • Signal molecules bind to receptor proteins and causes a change in the cell • Changes in permeability • Open ion channel • Second messengers • Activates another protein inside the cell • Enzyme action • Speeds up a reaction (heroin)
