  3. Native American Life • We have learned about how the Native Americans lived: their food, clothing, shelter, and culture • Do you remember how they hunted and gather food? They relied (depended) on their environment (where they lived) for what they needed to survive.

  4. European Exploration’s Impact • When the European’s came to America, they brought diseases and trouble to the Native Americans. Many Native Americans died as a result. Fighting over land became a constant battle. European’s weapons were more powerful and the Native American’s suffered most fatalities as a result.

  5. The Lost Colony • The Lost Colony was a group of people that came to America and set up a colony – a new place to settle. • One of their group members, John White, went back to England for help and supplies. But when he returned much later he could not find anyone. • No one really knows what happened to them. It is a mystery to this day!

  6. Life in NC after European Exploration • Life in North Carolina changed after the European Explorers came and started settling. • The people who settled in the Carolina Territory started setting up governments so that the people would have leadership and direction. • At this time they were still under the rule of the King of England.

  7. How/Why NC was Established • North Carolina was established as a state after the United States won independence from England. • In 1789, North Carolina became a state by signing the US Constitution.

  8. NC Constitution • We learned that the North Carolina Constitution has gone through some changes since it was first written. • These changes, revisions, have helped it to be a strong document that has lasted for many years.

  9. State Elected Leaders • We have many leaders for the state of North Carolina that are elected by the people to do a certain job. • It is important that the people get to choose who will represent them in government for new laws and decisions to be made. This is why it is very important to vote during elections.

  10. NC Governing Documents • North Carolina has • certain documents, • specifically the State Constitution, that help the government do its job correctly. • These documents were written using other colonial documents as a guide and to help the state govern consistently over time. Everything must be in agreement.

  11. State & Local Governments • We learned how the state and local governments are alike and different. • We also learned the purposes of each government, and how they work together.

  12. Extension Activity • Choose one lesson that you want to watch again to help you review. Watch the video for that lesson and write a paragraph about the topic for that lesson. Be sure to include 3 details about the topic.

  13. Until Next Time… • Thanks for following along. Next time we will learn about the rights and responsibilities of the Preamble.
