North Carolina History 4th Grade Ms. Lewis • Lesson 3 – Today we will learn about Exploration: • Different Explorers • Discoveries • Reasons
First Exploration • Christopher Columbus was the first explorer to land in America. • He thought he had landed in India because he was trying to find a new route to India.
Reasons for Exploration • Once Columbus came back and it was decided that he had found a land they did not know about, other explorers wanted to see this new place. • They were looking for new land to claim for England, foods, gold, and anything to make them rich.
Discovering the “New Land” • The “New Land” was a mysterious place since no one knew anything about it. • So people from many different countries wanted to come and see for themselves.
Spanish Explorers • After Columbus, Spanish explorers came and went back with stories of gold & riches that they heard from the Native Americans that they met. • Once those stories were spread, explorers everywhere wanted to come and discover the New Land.
North Carolina’s Discovery • Sir Walter Raleigh was one of the first explorers to send a group over to see what they could find. • Sir Walter wanted to explore because his older brothers were explorers. • His brother Gilbert died trying to settle in the New World.
North Carolina’s Discovery (Continued) • Sir Walter Raleigh sent the first group over to see how things were in this New Land. • He, himself was not able to make the trip. • The first group went back to England with good reports in 1584.
Second Expedition • Richard Greenville was sent by Raleigh to set up a colony in1585 – starting with 108 settlers. • The group had a hard time making friends with the Native Americans because of the cultural differences between the 2 groups.
The Second Expedition Comes to an End • Richard Greenville left to get supplies from England. • Settlers soon left with Drake, the ship’s captain, to go back to England, too. They were not happy and still didn’t have enough supplies to keep them alive for long.
The “Lost Colony” • The next expedition was in 1587. 150 settlers, including families, went to make their home in the New Land. • John White was the governor (or leader) of the settlers. • It was too late in the season to plant crops, so they were worried about what they were going to eat.
The “Lost Colony” - Continued • The Native Americans were not happy with the settlers. • They were taking their land and killing their food (hunting). • Not all of the English settlers were nice to them, but some were.
The “Lost Colony” • John White had to return to England for supplies. (since they couldn’t plant crops to eat) • White couldn’t get back to the New World until 1590 due to Spain and England being at war. • When he returned all of the settlers had disappeared.
What happened? • There are different theories(ideas): • They all died because of hunger and lack of food. • They got attacked by Native Americans (taken as slaves or killed). • They joined the Native American tribe and lived with them.
Extension Activity • Pretend that you were one of the explorers traveling to the New World. • Write a letter to your family telling them what is happening and how you feel.
Until Next Time • Thanks for following along. Next time we will learn more about the explorers who first settled in North Carolina.
