What is a mind map. • A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word or idea.
Steps to create a mind mapStep 1 • 1. Choose the central idea, what is your mind Map going to be about.
Step 2 • 2. Brainstorm ideas about the topic you are going to talk about. • Brainstorm means, you are going to write as many ideas as come to your mind about the topic. • For example, if we were going to brainstorm about "Global warming", what ideas come to your mind?
Step 3 • Read all the ideas you brainstormed about and find the ones you consider as the most important, interesting or relevant for the topic you want to explain.
Step 4 • Use the ideas you highlighted to find categories. • A category is one of a set of classes among which all things might be distributed. • For example: if we were talking about fruits, what categories can you relate them to?
Step 5 • Once you have the categories, put them around the main idea, be sure this categories are totally and fully connected to the centre and in coherence with your objective.
Step 6 • It is very important these categories to contain subcategories ( this means you can classify the rest of the ideas you brainstormed in these categories). • For example if we were talking about the following fruits: strawberry, cherry, blackberry, raspberry. Which would be the category for them?
Step 7 • One you have all the categories around the main or central idea, you just have to classify all the secondary ideas into those categories.
Important tips • When working in a mind map, always have into account the following advices: • 1. Try to define the categories using a few words. • 2. Try to use pictures instead of words when possible. • 3. Use colors to differentiate the categories.
