Dependent Clauses in Periodic Sentences • Contain details • Use descriptive language • Often creates good imagery • Does not complete a sentence • Does not reveal the point the writer is trying to make • Followed by a comma E.g. Despite heavy winds and nearly impenetrable ground fog,
Main Clause • Reveals the main point of the sentence • Added after a dependent clause to finish the sentence • Does not contain any information irrelevant to the main point E.g. the plane landed safely.
The Full Sentence • Main point: A plane was able to land safely • Information leading up to the main point: What about it? It’s just there to add to the suspense. Despite heavy winds and nearly impenetrable ground fog, the plane landed safely.
When are they used? • When adding curiosity and interest • Creative writing (stories, novels etc.) • Persuasive writing (it forces the reader to read your evidence with open minds before getting to the point) • Clever poems • Used a lot in situational irony
Why are they used? • Used to add suspense and mystery • Enriches an image (imagery) • Creates effective arguments
Practice • 1. The bird flew upward with great speed and velocity. • 2. Education has no equal when it comes to opening minds and instilling values. • 3. The hotel has greatly expanded its customer base through the addition of a state-of-the art fitness spa, extensive advertising, and weekend specials.
Game Time Create a piece of literature using as many periodic sentences as possible. This must be done using creative writing such as a story, poem, song, and even RAP!!!!!! :D Points will be awarded for as many periodic sentences as well as, the amount of literary devices in each sentence. Example: As I lay on the soaking ground, watching my friends die, a tear slowly crawls out of my eye.
