Render & Export Best Practices For Scientific Animation Audio-Video AV for Researchers KVL Production Workshop
Agenda • Presentation (15 mins) • Software & Formats • Industry & KVL Standards • Request Handling • Q&A (15 mins or less) • Your Center’s Template (30 mins or less) • Troubleshooting one-on-one (1+ hours)
Goals Regarding AV Production • Integrate video production workflows between your center & KVL • Streamline and SPEED UP video production turnaround time • Clarify the types of video requests KVL can handle • Clarify our production time demands for each request type • Develop a pre-defined branded template for your center with your center’s input and approval
What is your workflow? Integrating workflows • What software or APIs do you use for exporting scientific animations? (MATLAB? ParaView? OpenGL? Open Scene Graph? Maya? Blender? Camtasia? IShowU, etc.) • How do you encode your animation videos? • Discuss further @ 1-on-1 portion of the workshop Our workflow Final Cut Pro/Premiere & After Effects/ProTools/FFMPEG IDEA: If we use the same AV standards, we can increase production quality and speed.
KVL Frame Rate Standards Frames Per Second (fps) Animations = 24 frames per second (or 23.97) Videos = 30fps (or 29.97) We can work with other frame rates, but recommend these frame rates.
Aspect Ratio Standards Old Television & Computer Ratio = 4:3 New Television & Computer Ratio: 16:9 KVL Standard This is the standard format for online video like YouTube, Vimeo, etc. The PowerPoint default setting and some university projector screens use this
4:3 ratio usually looks unprofessional in videos since black bars of wasted space appear on either side 4:3 Ratio 16:9 Ratio KVL Standard
Industry/KVL HD Resolution Standards 1920 X 1080 (Full HD) 1280 X 720 (HD) KVL Standard
KVL Compression Standards Lossy data encoding compresses data by discarding (losing) some of it to compress the file which can cause digital generation loss. (Smaller and more portable, but degraded) Lossless data encoding allows you to compress the file and then decompress it without losing any data. (Larger, but higher quality and KVL can decompress and edit the file) We need the AV file in lossless compression, if you want us to edit, add audio, text, motion graphics or FX.
KVL AV Standards Overview (Based on our Final Cut Pro/Adobe After Effects/ProTools workflow.) Frame Rate: Animations and 4k = 24fps (or 23.97)Videos = 30fps (or 29.97) Aspect Ratio: 16:9Resolution: 1920X1080 • Editing Source File Formats: • Video: ProRes, MOV, R3D • Audio: WAV with 48k sample rate • Deliverable Formats: • AV: Ffmpeg x264 All other AV parameters are supported, but not recommended.
Production Types and Time Costs Basic (a few hours): your animation/video + simple title + your audio (Media created by you, we simply mux them into one file.) Deluxe (a couple of days): Basic + motion graphics Premium (a few weeks): Deluxe+ KVL created animation, video or audio Pro (a few months): Premium + Storyboard, Production Planning, Interview Audio and/or Video, Please submit your requests accordingly.
