Oklahoma Priority Academic Student Skills Grade 4 Social Studies: 2.1 – Interpret geographic information using primary and secondary sources, atlases, charts, graphs, and visual images. 4.5 – Describe the causes of movement of large groups of people into the United States from other countries and within the United States now and long ago. Grade 5 Social Studies: 3.1 – Describe early European settlements in colonial America (e.g., Jamestown, Plymouth Plantations, Massachusetts Bay and New Amsterdam) and identify reasons people came to the Americas (e.g., economic opportunity, slavery, escape from religious persecution, military adventure and release from prison). 7.4 – Interpret geographic information to explain how society changed as the population of the United States moved west, including where Native Americans lived and how they made their living.

  3. Objectives Students will learn that the Pilgrims first landed on the tip of Cape Cod. Students will discover why the Pilgrims did not establish a settlement on Cape Cod, but chose Plymouth as a permanent settlement instead. Students will ascertain where the Native Americans lived and how they made their living. Students will detect what the interaction between European settlers and Native Americans was and what happened to the Native Americans’ way of life as they were pushed out of their traditional lands.

The women were glad to go ashore to wash their clothes after the long voyage.   13. The Pilgrims stayed in Provincetown Harbor for five weeks, where they created and signed the Mayflower Compact.

  14. The Mayflower Compact was the first governing document of Plymouth Colony. These are the names of the forty-one male passengers who signed the document.

  15. www.NationalGeographic.com Provincetown lies on the very narrow tip of Cape Cod peninsula on an unprotected spit of land in the path of the icy winds brought by the cold Labrador Current in the winter. The Pilgrims found the land to be rocky underneath the constantly shifting sands which was not good for farming. There were few streams and the salt water coming in from the ocean at high tide made the water undrinkable.

  16. After five weeks in Provincetown, the Pilgrims sailed across Cape Cod Bay and founded a settlement at Plymouth. The Pilgrims made their historic Plymouth Rock landing on December 21, 1620.

  19. When the Pilgrims arrived on Cape Cod and at Plymouth they found lobster so plentiful that they could pick it up on the beaches.
