  1. Chapter 4 Section 3 American Revolution

  2. The War is Won: • Spring 1781: British General Charles Cornwallis invaded VA. Hoping to keep control of the South. • His forces linked up with Commander Benedict Arnold who was the Continental hero of Saratoga (He is a traitor). • These forces met little resistance at the beginning. • June 1781: American General Anthony Wayne and his troops forced Cornwallis to retreat to Yorktown.

  3. Defeat at Yorktown: • September 28, 1781: With the help form French troops and ships, American forces begin to bombard the British. • October 14, 1781: Alexander Hamilton (Washington’s aide) led an attack to capture key British defenses. • October 19, 1781: Cornwallis and 8,000 British troops surrender. • They will wave the white flag and lay down their weapons.

  4. Treaty of Paris: • British Prime Minister Lord North realized after Yorktown that the war was over. • March 1782: English Parliament voted to begin peace negotiations. • Ben Franklin, John Adams, and John Jay represented the United States of America in Paris.

  5. Settlement: • Great Britain recognized the independent United States of America (The Mississippi River was the western boundary). • Great Britain gave Spanish Florida back to Spain (GB received FL after French and Indian War). • France received British colonies in Africa and The Caribbean. • November 24, 1783: The last British troops leave from NYC. • The Revolutionary War was now officially over and the foundation of the United States was underway.
