  2. Top Lighting • Skylights • Monitors • Clerestories Provide high quality and high quantity illumination over large area.

  3. Not workable in multistory buildings • Doesn’t satisfy view and orientation Top lighting should supplement and not replace windows.

  4. Skylight • Horizontal or slightly sloped openings in the roof. • Direct sunlight needs to be diffused for better visual performance and reducing glare. • Skylight face the summer sun more than winter and collect more heat in summer  problem • Glare and heat

  5. Skylight Strategies 1- Skylight Spacing

  6. 2- Use splayed openings for better light distribution. 3- Place the skylight high in a space. For light to diffuse and reduce glare

  7. 4. Place skylights near walls 5. Use interior reflectors to diffuse the sunlight.

  8. 6. Use exterior shades and reflectors . 7. Use steeply sloped skylights to improve the summer/winter balance.

  9. 8. Use sunlight for dramatic effect.

  10. Clerestories • Monitors  when the window face two sides • Light Scoops  the window face one direction and reflect light with the opposite side

  11. Vertical clerestories has the characteristics of windows rather than skylights • Facing south: collect more sunlight in winter than in summer, can be shaded easily • Facing north: low but constant light with no glare • West and east are to be avoided ;receive more summer sun than winter and hard to shade

  12. Advantage of clerestories  diffued light; the result from light reflected off the ceiling • Disadvantage no view

  13. Clerestory strategies 1- Orientation. • Facing south: collect more sunlight in winter than in summer, can be shaded easily • Facing north: low but constant light with no glare • West and east are to be avoided ;receive more summer sun than winter and hard to shade

  14. 2-spacing.

  15. 3-reflective roof. White reflective roofs to collect more sunlight

  16. 4-suncatcher baffles.

  17. 5-reflective interior walls.

  18. 6-diffusing baffles.

  19. Other daylighting techniques • Light wells or shafts

  20. Other daylighting techniques • Tubular skylight

  21. Outdoor shading Membrane
