Honduran Water Improvement Project Aaron Feller AJ Stoll Guy Kahler Lee Robinson Matt Houdeshell Zach Heitman
Overview of Project • Los Sanchez in southwestern Honduras • Water supply to village • Distribution • Storage Tank • Treatment Options • Latrine • Maintenance
Constraints • Landscape • Mountainous • Cost • Unfamiliar with area • Materials • Unknown water quality • Simplicity • No electricity
Distribution • Spring Box • Conduction Line • Storage Tank • Distribution to house groups
Spring Box • Helps filter and clean water Gravel Stone Spring
Conduction Line • Transports water from spring to the main storage tank in the village
Storage Tank • Holds approximately 5,000 gallons • Constructed of concrete blocks
House Groups • Distribution line and storage tanks in all 3 house groups
Treatment Options • Conceptual options for Los Sanchez and future projects • Slow Sand Filtration • Granular Chlorine • Liquid Chlorine • Solar Disinfection • No Treatment
Slow Sand Filtration • Filters and treats water
Granular Chlorine • Locally manufactured and cost effective
Liquid Chlorine • Less cost effective than granular chlorine, higher maintenance and more skill required • Requires more controlled storage and handling • Knowledge of chemicals required
Solar Disinfection • Use of direct sunlight to disinfect water • Requires 6 hours in 0%-50% cloudy skies • Requires 2 days for up 100% cloudy skies
Grey Water • Few standards • Drain at each wash station • Piped to designated disposal area
Waste Management • One existing latrine • Not large enough for demands of entire village • The single latrine is not always used by the villagers • Latrine floods during wet season • Flooding causes odors and unsanitary conditions • There is a need for additional latrines • Additional latrines are to improve upon current conditions
Waste Management • A ventilated dual pit latrine was chosen • Little interaction with waste • Simplicity of operation • Little maintenance
Waste Management • Four ventilated dual pit latrines will be constructed • Pits are designed to hold two years of waste • Longer time between emptying of pit • Extended time allows waste to become less hazardous Picture of design • Talk about maintenance, operation, emptying pit, switching pits
