BI MD during block 2(Wed29-06 22:00 – Thu 30-06 06:00) A.Boccardi, D.Bellorad, E.Bravin, E.Calvo, B.Dehning, J.Emery, M.Favier, A.Guerrero, A.Jeff, R.Jones, T.Lefevre, A.Rabiller, F.Roncarolo, R.Steinhagen, M.Sapinsk et al. MD overview/motivation Plan proposal Open questions LSWG – 24 Jun 2011
MD overview (I) Study the accuracy and resolution of transverse profile monitors, AGM, LDM, BPMs, Schottky, BCTs BPM • Response vs bunch intensity • Directivity (single chamber-2 beams BPMs) BCT • DC BCT vs FBCT studies • FBCT response vs bunch intensity SCHOTTKY • Response to different beam conditions • Response vs offset w.r.t. beam orbit (bumps) Abort Gap Monitor • Response to light entrance angle (internal steering) and position (bumps) after the installation of diffusers in front of the PM • Response after switching off RF (450 GeV) Longitudinal Density Monitor • Response to light entrance angle (internal steering) and position (bumps) • Response to different transverse beam sizes LSWG - 24 Jun 2011
MD overview (II) WS • Response to PM gain / filters • Test algorithms for background subtraction (particularly B1) • Track emittance from PSB to LHC • Study blow-up induced by scans BSRT • Absolute magnification during closed orbit bumps • Focusing studies BGI • Signal/noise vs intensity vs gas pressure • Absolute calibration with closed orbit bumps WS-BSRT-BGI Cross calibration • Compare the 3 instruments under different beam conditions LSWG - 24 Jun 2011
MD plan proposal (I) Most of the studies: B1 + B2 PERIOD 1: 450 GeV, 1 bunch with I >= 1.1e11 p • BPMs response while scraping down to pilot bunch intensity • Parasitic studies with all other monitors PERIOD 2: 450 GeV, 4 bunches with I >= 2e11 p/bunch • DC BCT and FBCT response while scraping down to pilot bunch intensity • Parasitic studies with all other monitors PERIOD 3: 450 GeV, 6 bunches with I ~= 1.1 p/bunch uniformly distributed in the ring • AGAP response after switching RF OFF • No abort gap cleaning during the study, put it ON if necessary before the dump PERIOD 4: 450 GeV, 12 bunches with I >= 1.1 p/bunch • Closed orbit bumps crossing IR4, as done at 3.5 TeV during MD1 • This time bumps have to pass through Schottky monitors We may combine Period 1 in Period 2 (and use only 4b with I>=2e11p/b LSWG - 24 Jun 2011
MD plan proposal (II) Most of the studies: B1 + B2 PERIOD 5: 3.5 TeV, 12 (or 24) bunches with I>=1.1e11 p/bunch (uniform emittances) + 1 pilot with as small as possible emittance (pilot bucket well separated from others) • Closed orbit bumps as during MD1 • WS-BSRT-BGI cross calibration (especially B1 that was lost last time) • ‘Ultimate’ WS-BSRT resolution if small pilot didn’t blow-up during the ramp • Blow-up only pilot with tune kicker • Then: blow-up everything via chromaticity LSWG - 24 Jun 2011
Outlook • Detailed program will be discussed on Monday within BI • Time estimate for each period • Scraping procedures • Optimize studies that can be done in parallel (B1/B2, different studies at the same time) • Final request for bunch patterns, intensities and average emittances • For the ramp with nominal bunches + small emittance pilot • Is it possible? What’s the smallest pilot we can get? • Damper will blow-up the pilot before-during-after the ramp? • For the 450 GeV period with RF OFF • Do we need cleaning before the dump? LSWG - 24 Jun 2011
