Some Facts • Nine out of ten middle school students have had their feelings hurt online. • Nearly 35% of kids have been threatened online and almost one in five have had it happen more than once.
More Facts • About 21% of kids have received mean or threatening e-mails. • Girls are about twice as likely as boys to be victims and perpetrators of cyber-bullying.
Why do kids cyberbully? • Entertainment • Revenge • Frustration • Boredom • To get a reaction • To stroke their own ego • By accident
The many forms of cyberbullying: • Flaming – Online “fights” using angry and vulgar language. • Harassment – Repeatedly sending offensive, rude, and insulting messages. • Denigration – Sending or posting cruel gossip or rumors about a person to damage his or her reputation or friendships.
The many forms of cyberbullying: • Impersonation – Using someone’s account and sending messages that would classify as one of the other forms. • Outing / Trickery – Sharing someone’s secrets or embarrassing information or images online of tricking someone into revealing the same information online. • Exclusion – Intentionally excluding someone from an online group.
Who are cyber bullies? ** From a recent classroom-based survey of a random sample of approximately 2,000 middle-school students from a large school district in the United States. ** Students were asked whether or not they had experienced cyber bullying.
