Strategic Planning NCHN Conference Network Planning San Diego, California April 14-17, 2008
Strategic Planning: What is it? • Determines where a network is going over the next year or more • Identifies how the network is going to get there, and • Reports how the network will know if it got there or not
Strategic Planning Engagement: • The focus of a strategic plan is usually on the entire network • Led by the organization’s leadership • Requires several meetings or concentrated pre-work
Approaching Strategic Planning • Goal-based planning • Focus on the network’s mission (vision and values as well) • Identify clear goals that tie to the mission • Indicate strategies to achieve the goals • Focus on action planning (who and by when)
Value Proposition of Strategic Planning • Clarifies the network’s plans • Allows a focus on the broad perspective and relief from firefighting • Ensures that all the stakeholders are identified • Allows all key leaders and stakeholders to be “on the same page” • Identifies the road to success and the time it may take
Success: • Forget perfection. There is only best thinking at this time • Forget the “plan.” The process of engaging the stakeholders is the key. • Remember the process improvement. Capture the learnings! • Simplicity rules. • The driving question: Is this realistic?
