NEW MANAGERS ORIENTATION PROGRAM Welcome to the Online Briefing
Where Did it All Begin? • Focus groups were held with new managers, and also with HR personnel to get feedback on new managers’ needs. • Replies were put together to assess the greatest needs new managers have when beginning state service, or moving from bargaining units into management positions.
What Did We Ask? • What information would help you (or your managers) be more effective in your agency? • What would make your being a manager in the State of Connecticut more appealing? • What kind of on-going support do you need as a manager to be effective in state government? • What are your thoughts about logistics and delivery of orientation?
Results • The information collected resulted in the 11 module orientation program now available to you, the State of Connecticut’s new state managers. • We will continue assessing this program and add follow-up and resources as needed.
Online Briefing Session This session will explain your roles as managers and program expectations of the New Managers Orientation Program.
Program Eligibility The State of Connecticut “New Managers Orientation Program” is designed for State of Connecticut managers in the managerial pay plan.
Program Eligibility It is recommended that as a new manager, you start the program within the first three months of employment and after you have completed your own agency’s new employee orientation program.
Program Objectives • To provide you with essential information resulting in the accomplishment of business results in your agency. • This information will consist of a broad overview concerning a multitude of topics, as well as resources to take back to your agency to aid in accurate completion of day-to-day work.
Program Objectives • As a new manager, you will be provided a unique opportunity to network with peers as you remain together for the duration of the program. • This orientation will provide a foundational overview of important topics. Expect more advanced training modules in the future. • This program will also begin building critical managerial competencies in the following areas:

Program Content • Module 1: Management in State Government • Module 2: The Boundaries • Modules 3-10: Human Resources Management • Module 11: Your Career as a State Manager
Program Delivery • 8:30 a.m. –12:30 p.m.(except modules 2, 3, 5 and 6, which will be full days; Module 11 including Graduation concludes at 1:30) • Eleven days of Orientation • Programs take place on Thursdays • Attendance is critical at all sessions! • Subject matter experts deliver all the orientation material
Program Norms • Be an active participant – ask questions and share ideas • Be respectful – listen attentively • Be punctual – arrive on time • Be considerate – set cell phones to vibrate • Be constructive – complete the evaluation at the end of each day
Program Recognition After attending all modules of the program, you will be awarded a certificate of completion.
Additionally… You may register for a variety of other courses to enhance your knowledge and skills after completing this program.
