GOALS OF THE SESSION • To understand the challenges of secondary schools in providing access to high school students • To learn concrete tips and strategies to gain counselor and administrator support to meet with students • To share ideas and support one another
WHO IS HERE? • Secondary School Counselors • School Counseling Directors/Administrators • Admission counseling staff • CBO/Non-profit counselors • Graduate Students • Other
WHY ARE YOU HERE? • You have awesome school counseling program but are not happy with your college visit program • You have not so great administrators who do little-to-nothing to advantage your students • You are an admission counselor who often gets frustrated when your access to high school students is limited • You love high school visits except when you are stuck in the cafeteria at lunch • You have no where else to be during this session
THINK-PAIR-SHARE • Why is college admission counselor access to high school students an issue? • Why do high school administrators not support college counseling efforts?
SECONDARY SCHOOL CHALLENGES • NCLB/ESSA mandates • Administrator/counselor demands on time and other responsibilities • Teachers not willing to let students out of class due to accountability concerns • Lack of understanding of the college search and information gathering process • Too many college visit requests to easily manage the process • Lack of time
COLLEGE ADMISSION CHALLENGES • Meeting institutional goals/expectations • Not feeling valued by secondary schools • Limited opportunities to meet with students • Not being able to meet with a counselor • Fewer students graduating from high school • Fewer students attending college fairs • Ineffective opportunities • Lunch tables • Activity Periods • Only on Fridays
SOLUTIONS • Create a college going culture which supports post-secondary programs and initiatives • Get administrator buy-in • Create a school or district task force • Build community partnership • Start a School Counseling Advisory Council • Build rapport and gain administrator support for your program and goals • Create an Annual Agreement • Create regular meeting schedule • Share relevant data • Set yearly post-secondary focused goals
SOLUTIONS (continued) • Build relationships • Admission staff attend school events - career day, college signing, college application week events, financial aid workshops • Create dialogue opportunities between high school academic departments and college faculty • Create formal (e.g.: in writing) partnership opportunities • Collect and analyze data which will support your needs and goals • Inquiry, application and matriculation rates • Remediation rates • Graduation rates
SOLUTIONS (continued) • Seek support from other secondary school and college admission colleagues • Attend counseling association meetings or professional development opportunities • Reach out through email groups/resources • Share examples/data from successful school partnerships • Offer resources/opportunities for your secondary school partners • College tour opportunities • Swag • Speakers • Campus events
