  1. “Us and Them” by David Sedaris • As you read, mark the text (highlight and write in the margins) for examples of satirical elements: hyperbole, irony, wit. Also, note passages that you find humorous. After reading it once, answer the following question at the end of the exerpt: How does the use of the satirical elements add to the satire in the text? • Complete the chart attached on pg. 79. You must pull three humorous passages (more than two sentences) and explain “What makes the passage funny?” (satirical elements used and how) and “What is the implied message or critique?” (what is Sedaris saying about the subject?) • Make sure your name and period are on the top of the front page. You will turn the packet in for a grade. You will be graded on your notes and your completed chart.
