David picks a Capital • David makes Jerusalem the new capital • It was located in a city between Judah and the other tribes • Joab leads the charge in driving out the Jebusites from Jerusalem and becomes the Prime Minister 2
Moving the Ark to Jerusalem • Jerusalem becomes a political and religious center once the Ark arrives • David tried to take the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem on a cart 3
Rules for the Ark • Exodus 25:13-15 • The ark needed to be carried by the Levites • Numbers 4:15 • “But they shall not touch the sacred objects, if they do they shall die” • Touching the Ark will cause death 4
First attempt • David had a cart built for the ark to be pulled by oxen • 1 Chron 13:7; 2 Samuel 6 • They transported it on a new cart • They danced and sang as they went 5
First attempt • 1 Chron 13:9-10 • Uzzah tried to catch the Ark as it tipped off the cart and was struck down for touching the ark • David became afraid of God and left the ark with an Israelite household for 3 months to make preparations to move the Ark properly 6

David dressed like a priest and offered sacrifice and was not punished like Saul. Why? 8
David teaches us • 2 Sam 6:14 • “Then David came dancing before the Lord with abandon” • David’s wife watched him dance and “despised him in her heart” • She described how ridiculous he looked 9
David responds to criticism • “I was dancing before the Lord…Not only will make merry before the Lord but I will demean myself even more. I will be lowly in your esteem, but I will be honored” • 2 Sam 6:21 11

David wants a Temple • David built the Kingdom into a small empire • With the help of the King of Tyre, David’s palace was an incredible sight to see. • “I dwell in a house of cedar but the ark of God dwells in a tent” 12
David began feeling that he was living in a better place than God. • “I dwell in a house of cedar but the ark of God dwells in a tent” • He shared this concern with Nathan • Nathan was a prophet of God who served King David • He was often consulted by kings because of his wisdom 13
God wanted to make a Covenant • Nathan had a vision telling him that God wanted much more for him than just to build a Temple • Nathan learned that he was going to establish a covenant with David. • God revealed to Nathan the elements of this Covenant. 14
