InformationLiteracy is... The ability to know when there is a need for information, to be able to identify, locate, evaluate and effectively and responsibly use and share that information for the... Problem at Hand
3 Processes Effective Researchers Use... • They mentally prepare for productive research • They use a variety of research tools and resources to find information • They evaluate the relevance and quality of that information and its sources in relation to... the NEED
Therefore ... We have 3 hopes (sometimes called outcomes)
3 Hopes Students will be able to... • Use a pre-research process whose goal is the creation of a good question • Use a variety of library tools and resources to find information that answers the question • Evaluate the relevance and quality of that information and its sources in relation to... the NEED
Methods of Mental Preparation Authentic? Pre-Research Processes to help you create a well focused researchable question • Driving Question Activity • Specialized Encyclopedias • The One Minute Expert • 5 Steps to Better Research(A Tutorial) • A “Knowlege Design Conversation”
One Minute Expert Tip 1 Do enough informal, free wheeling research in order to be able to speak intelligently about your topic for one minute.
5 Steps to Better Research Tip 2 http://lib.colostate.edu/tutorials/research.html Watch it several times. Do what it says.
Have a Knowledge Design Conversation Tip 3 With another person ... or all by yourself. • Purposes • Structure • Examples • Arguments
Here’s a Knowledge Design Conversation ... For Music Purpose? To entertain, to soothe, the provoke... or ? Structure? Folk, Jazz, Hip Hop... or ? Star Spangled Banner, Uncle Kracker, Frank Sinatra Examples? “What those young people are playing today isn’t real music!” Arguments?
The Purpose of a Knowledge Design Conversation is to help you think about your topic. The process is a combination of brainstorming what you already know and looking up what you don’t. As you explore the 4 areas of thought you’ll find yourself getting closer and closer to a GOOD QUESTION. With a good question in mind, you’ll know what you’re looking for as you embark on a more focused phase of the research.
What are the marks of a Good Question? • Based on some knowledge of the topic • Focus not too broad or too narrow • Interesting to researcher • Potentially interesting to others • Feasible resources available to answer the question
However... Authentic Questions are best ! If your situation is such that you cannot work through the process in order to arrive at an authentic question... You can look at lists of questions and “borrow” good questions. √ SIRS Knowledge Source My favorite databases for this are: √ CQ Researcher √ Congressional Digest √ Opposing Viewpoints (books)
It’s time to “hit the library.” But before you do so, watch Module 2 so you’ll know what finding tools and resources are available to you.
