  1. Thoughtful Theseus Athenian hero known for his brains and intellect Athenians would more likely be impressed with an intellectual, clever hero than with a brawny, unthinking hero. Which mythological hero is considered brawny and unthinking?

What makes him a hero? • Leading questions • What are some of his attributes of strength and courage? • How is his intelligence demonstrated? • Does he have compassion? • Does he hold a capacity for human error? Using both the front and back of a sheet of paper, write each attribute of a hero and list examples of each from chapter 10; Theseus.

  3. Strength and courage • Lifting the rock from the sword (thus ready for his father) • Refusing to travel by water in safety • Cleansing the bandits from the countryside • Volunteering to go to Crete and killing the Minotaur • Taking action against Thebes • Journeying to the underworld with Prithous

  4. Intelligence • His clever method of killing bandits by making the punishment fit the crime • His way of revealing himself to his father by drawing his sword not announcing his claim • His common sense acceptance of Ariadne’s help • His democratic system of ruling

  5. Compassion • Seen in his action against Thebes for refusal to bury the dead • In his comfort of Oedipus • In his acceptance of Hercules’ hand

  6. Capacity for human error • Seen in his forgetting to change the sail • His rejection of his son without more proof of guilt • Deserting his wife on shore (another version – winds kept him from her)
