Supplemental Child Care • Supervision of young children by someone other than the parents

Home-based Child Care • The least structured and demanding situation located at home or the caregivers home.

Nanny • A trained professional who cares for a child in the family home.

Au Pair • A young person from another country who lives with a family and cares for their children

Family Child Care • A homey setting where children enjoy personal attention in small groups

Play groups • A time where friends or neighbors meet and let the kids play together while watching

Child Care Center • Provide supervised group care and socialization experiences with a trained staff.

Sliding Scale • A system for families whose income falls below a certain level. • Amount family pays for childcare is based on the family income. Lower income families pay less for childcare.

Licensed • When minimum standards for health, safety, and staff are met. • Set by the Department of Public Welfare in PA.

Accreditation • When a childcare program and facilitymeets higher standards of quality (in the program offered and the staff training and qualifications). • KEYSTONE STARS is a group in Pennsylvania thatawards accreditation to childcare programs

NAEYC • National Association for the education of young children • A national group that accredites childcare programs

Subsidized Childcare • Child care that is at least partially funded by public or charitable funds to decrease its cost for parents.
