He learns of the problems the returning exiles are having in Judah Nehemiah is a servant of the King of Persia He prays for his people Israel He asks king Artaxerxes to allow him to go to Jerusalem to help rebuild it. This the king allows , sending letters of passage and some mounted troops with him
Bible Summary - Nehemiah • Nehemiah inspects the city walls and tells the Jews to commence the building stating “God of heaven will give us success” • Some local officials oppose this but Nehemiah refers them to the King • The work was split up , individual groups being assigned to different parts of the walls • Those who opposed the rebuilding of the walls plot to attack the builders but Nehemiah organises the Jews into workers and soldiers who defend the builders
Bible Summary - Nehemiah • Nehemiah finds that certain Jewish officials are overtaxing the people , to a point where they were having to sell their families into slavery. • Nehemiah puts an end to this making the nobles and officials who were doing the taxing and money lending take an oath before God to stop this. However the people still have to pay tribute to the Persian governor
Bible Summary - Nehemiah • Those who oppose the building of the wall continue to intimidate Nehemiah, but the the wall is completed (52 days) • Nehemiah appoints guards, musicians , priests. He lists the exiles who have returned • Ezra reads the Book of the Law of God • The people celebrate their return to and the rebuilding of Jerusalem • The people confess their sins and make a binding agreement to be a people set apart for God , to keep the Sabbath, to contribute to the upkeep of the Temple and priests, and bring forward the first of the harvest to the Temple
Bible Summary - Nehemiah • Only the leaders of the people, Temple priests and some people selected by casting of lots lived in Jerusalem • All the Levites were brought from the surrounding area to celebrate the dedication of the Wall of Jerusalem. • Anyone of foreign descent was excluded from Israel • Nehemiah returned to the King of Persia as promised. • He later paid a visit to Jerusalem
Bible Summary - Nehemiah • Nehemiah found foreigners had been given a room in the courts of the house of God. He quickly removed them. • He also found tithes had not been given to the priests who had to return to their own fields • He found some people desecrating the Sabbath and reminded them of God’s wrath at previous breaches of the Covenant. • Nehemiah also warned against those who married foreigners throwing them into exile and even beating some.
