  2. What is IBHS? A nonprofit research, educational and communications institution supported by the insurance industry to reduce injuries, deaths, property damage, economic losses and human suffering caused by natural disasters.

  7. Community Land Use • Educate people about the relationship between land use and disaster losses and the value of building out of harm’s way. • Work with state and local governments to adopt procedures requiring consideration of natural hazards vulnerability in making land use decisions.

  8. Construction of New Buildings • Ensure that all new structures will be designed, engineered and constructed using up-to-date techniques and materials that prepare for natural disasters. • Promote codes, structural design and engineering techniques and construction materials that are low cost and effective in reducing disaster losses.

  9. Retrofit of Existing Structures • Develop cost-effective techniques for retrofitting existing structures. • Establish incentives for all stakeholders to use these techniques to retrofit existing structures. • Organize and publicize programs that lead to retrofitting high-risk human care facilities (hospitals, nursing homes, schools, etc).

  10. Public Outreach To increase awareness about natural hazards, understand the associated risks, know how to reduce them and want to reduce them. • Business • Emergency managers • The insurance industry • The media • Planners • Lenders • Designers • Builders • The general public

  11. Information Management • Provide for the collection, analysis and dissemination of natural disaster loss and preparedness information. • Develop and maintain a database of insurer paid losses from natural disasters.

IBHS Research Services • The IBHS Information Center is the major information resource for IBHS members and staff. • On-site library contains over 2,500 books and periodicals, almost 300 videos, and other types of print and visual materials. • The Information Center offers reference assistance and in-depth research on any topic relating to natural disasters. • Reference assistance form and a list of videos available for loan can be accessed on the IBHS Web site
