Strategic Initiatives • Community Land Use • Construction of New Buildings • Retrofit of Existing Structures • Public Outreach • Information Management
Community Land Use • Educate people about the relationship between land use and disaster losses and the value of building out of harm’s way. • Work with state and local governments to adopt procedures requiring consideration of natural hazards vulnerability in making land use decisions.
Construction of New Buildings • Ensure that all new structures will be designed, engineered and constructed using up-to-date techniques and materials that prepare for natural disasters. • Promote codes, structural design and engineering techniques and construction materials that are low cost and effective in reducing disaster losses.
Retrofit of Existing Structures • Develop cost-effective techniques for retrofitting existing structures. • Establish incentives for all stakeholders to use these techniques to retrofit existing structures. • Organize and publicize programs that lead to retrofitting high-risk human care facilities (hospitals, nursing homes, schools, etc).
Public Outreach To increase awareness about natural hazards, understand the associated risks, know how to reduce them and want to reduce them. • Business • Emergency managers • The insurance industry • The media • Planners • Lenders • Designers • Builders • The general public
Information Management • Provide for the collection, analysis and dissemination of natural disaster loss and preparedness information. • Develop and maintain a database of insurer paid losses from natural disasters.
