Using Art to help our Thinking This exercise uses a few Thinking Routines to help you use your thinking skills in different ways to develop your understanding of some things you have already studied.
Look and Think… 10x2 • To the right is an artwork, a sculpture, by Jeff Koons. • Look for 30 seconds, thinking about what it might be about. (What ideas does it make you think of?) • Now, on the sheet provided, write down 10 ideas as words or phrases this artwork makes you think about. • DO NOT MOVE TO THE NEXT SLIDE YET
Look and Think again… • Now, consider what you already know about MATTER and FORCES. • Look again for 30 seconds • List another 10 words or phrases this sculpture makes you think of in relation to matter and forces.
What makes you say that? • What surprises you about this sculpture? • Do you think the scenario depicted in this artwork is realistic? • What makes you say that?
What makes you say that? • Now look at this image to the right…. • What do you think is going on here? • What makes you say that?
Connect… • Now, look at your ideas from the 10x2 lists when you looked at the Jeff Koons sculpture again…. • What connections can you make between this image and the Jeff Koons sculpture?
Extend… • How has your thinking about matter and forces been extended by thinking about these images? • Do you think the artist Jeff Koons has a knowledge of density?
Challenge… • How has this exercise challenged your thinking about matter and forces?
