Founda?ons for the Healthier Future A s we step into a transformative era in Indian healthcare, I find myself both inspired and thoughtful about the journey ahead. The sector stands at a compelling crossroads, where cutting-edge innovations intersect with fundamental challenges that demand our immediate attention. When we publish this edition, I encourage you to study these success stories and think about how you may apply the knowledge to your healthcare delivery system. The risks are real and so are the opportunities for those who will be willing to exit their comfort zone and adapt. Creating a healthcare system is not a one-day job but is expected to be capable of serving tomorrow’s need in addition to today’s requirements. In our exclusive edition this month, we pay tribute to India’s 5 Most Trusted Healthcare Brands in 2024 – the leaders that have not only survived the transformative forces but thrived through them. These success stories are quite informative about what can make a healthcare institution special in today’s world. However, reading this list of accomplishments make me realize there is more that has to be done. The state of Indian health care system is quite intriguing – on one hand there is rapid shift towards technological innovation and innova- tions, on the other hand one sees the imperative need for constructing infrastructure and creating manpower. The way forward is to take a multi-dimensional approach. It’s high time organizations foster the environment for innovation and not just tolerate it. This entails putting resources in modern amenities, enhancing digitization and perhaps, most crucially, building the human capital. Health care in the future is not a question of having the right tools but the right people who will be able to use these tools successfully. Nisha Mehra Nisha Mehra - Nisha Mehra

The orthopaedic system will be upgraded soon to enable robotic surgery. Kindly tell us about yourself and your professional milestones so far. What has been your source of motivation in this extensive career journey that has led you to success today? I am the Group Director of Orthopaedic Sciences for Medica Group of Hospitals and Vice Chairman of Medica Superspeciality Hospital Kolkata with over 25 years of experience and over 25 000 successful orthopaedic procedures under my belt. After receiving extensive training in Musculoskeletal Disorders, I have successfully treated patients suffering from Joint Disease, Sports and Work injuries, and those in need of Arthroscopy, Joint Replacement, and Reconstruction Surgeries, among other things, over the years. I had the opportunity of performing the first same stage bilateral knee replacement surgery in Bangladesh and the state of Manipur. In past was invited as Guest Joint Replacement Surgeon by the past Health Minister of Bangladesh to perform Joint Replacement Surgeries. In what ways are the avenues provided by emerging technology helping you provide the best orthopaedic surgery treatment to your patients? Orthopaedic and joint surgery patterns and conceptions have shifted as a result of technological advancements. All procedures have become minimally invasive, short-stay, nearly painless, swift in recovery and rehabilitation, and targeted with predictable outcomes. Technology has significantly increased accuracy, saving lives and limbs, resulting in enormous economic benefits and savings through early returns to work. What are the challenges you face during treatments? How have you infused your leadership skills to turn them into opportunities for the industry? Odd hours and tight deadlines are often difficult for both the individual and the team. The strength of goodwill and ethical values, as well as patients' good wishes and pleasing demeanour, washes away all problems and makes them appear trivial. Adequate compensation, not only in terms of quality-of-life standards but also in terms of skill development and caring work environments, is extremely beneficial in nurturing the individual in the team and conferring responsibility, which leads to the development of future leaders. www.insightscare.in November, 2024 20
Addressing Urban-Rural Disparities in India's Healthcare Access S ignificant obstacles stand in the way of attaining universal health coverage in India due to the glaring differences in healthcare between the urban and rural areas. Since around 70% of people live in rural areas, these groups have worse health outcomes as a result of the unequal distribution of healthcare resources. This article delves into the root causes of these inequalities and then gives recommendations on how to get rid of this gap, seeking equity in healthcare. Healthcare Infrastructure This is an extremely high level of bias toward urban areas in India in the context of healthcare facility distribution. All the basic healthcare facilities are usually absent in the rural areas, whereas modern hospitals and specialized treatment are available in cities. There is also more critical deficiency in medical services in rural areas since only 20% of all healthcare facilities reportedly exist in that area. For example, many villages do not have full-time doctors. The doctor-to-population ratio is below that which WHO researchers say. Economic Barriers Economic constraints indeed severely limit access to healthcare services in rural India. Out-of-pocket costs are formidable for many families, discouraging them from seeking medical care; still, most families seek loans or sales of assets to pay for care. Even under government programs such as Ayushman Bharat and Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), which are an effort at offering health insurance to economically poor families, there is still a great deal of the absence of access and awareness. Reports have quoted that close to 90% of rural people do not have good health www.insightscare.in November, 2024 23
