What is Erthropoiein? • Erthropoiein is the hormone placed in charge of the signaling the monumental task of producing red blood cells. • Also begins the synthesis of Hemoglobin, the element of the blood that carries oxygen.
Where is it found? • EPO is created largely in the kidney, however 10% or so of it is created within the liver. • EPO travels through the blood stream to reach the bone marrow where it signals for the production of red blood cells.
What Causes the Creation of EPO? • EPO is created when the kidney senses a lack of oxygen within the blood, often a sign of anemia or lack of red blood cells. • The kidney then creates EPO and releases it into the blood stream to enter bone marrow throughout the body.
What is EPO’s Structure? • EPO is known as one of many Glycogens. • Glycogens are a protein that obtains an attached sugar, often used in signaling several aspects of blood creation and management.
Where is EPO Most Active? • EPO is most active within the bone marrow where it signals the production of red blood cells.
What Does a Lack of EPO Cause? • Normal amount of EPO ranges from 4 to 24 mU/ml (milliunits per milliliter) • A Lack of EPO causes Anemia or a severe lack of red blood cells. • Treatment includes intravaneous injection of Epoetin Alfa, an artificial substance that mimics EPO.
What Does a Surplus of EPO Cause? • An excessive amount of EPO leads to a condition called Plycythemia Vera, or having too many red blood cells. • Too many red blood cells can thicken blood and lead to stroke, heart attack, damaged skin, etc… • Treatment includes draining blood for immediate relief of blood pressure and long-term treatment of Anagrelide to thin the blood.
