Earth Science The Branches of earth science
Objectives • Students will be able to: • Identify the branches of Earth Science. • Give examples of what things are included in each branch. • Describe the items that are studied by scientists working in each branch of Earth Science.
The Branches of Earth Science Astronomy Meteorology Geology Oceanography Environmental Science
The Branches of Earth Science The Orion Nebula, from NASA and the Hubble Space Telescope • Astronomy – The study of objects outside the Earth’s atmosphere. • Subspecialties: • Astrophysics – the study of the universe and its physical properties • Planetary Science – Study of the planets in our Solar System and how they were formed.
The Branches of Earth Science Hurricane Earl near Florida – September 2010 • Meteorology – The study of the forces and processes in the atmosphere that produce weather • Subspecialties: • Climatology – Study of the patterns of weather over time. • Atmospheric Chemistry – Chemistry of the Earth’s atmosphere and the atmosphere of other planets.
The Branches of Earth Science Mt. St. Helen’s in Washington State erupting in 1980. • Geology – The study of the materials that make up the Earth, and the processes that form and change these materials • Subspecialties: • Paleontology – Study the remains of organisms that once lived on Earth and ancient environments • Geochemistry – Study the Earth’s composition and the processes that change it.
The Branches of Earth Science • Oceanography – The study of Earth’s oceans (they cover nearly 75% or ¾ of the Earth’s surface) • Subspecialties: • Physical Oceanography – Study of the physical characteristics of oceans, e.g. salinity, waves and currents • Marine Geology – Study of the geologic features of the ocean’s floor including plate tectonics in the ocean.
The Branches of Earth Science Collecting samples of groundwater from a well. • Environmental Science – the study of the interactions of organisms and their surroundings. • Subspecialities: • Environmental Soil Science – Study of the interactions between humans and the soil, e.g. farming, pollution, groundwater • Environmental Chemistry – The study of chemical alterations to the environment through pollution and natural means.
