Goals for B/Tau working Group (1) • A number of LHC flagship physics channels require identifications of b’s and tau leptons. • This group will work on selection, reconstruction and analysis of events containing b and tau objects. • This task involves: • Trigger Level 2.x reconstruction algorithms • Trigger Level 3 algorithms • Evaluation and optimization of the trigger performances for the relevant physics channels (i.e. signal and background rates, trigger efficiency and suppression, trigger tables) • Offline algorithms • Evaluation of physics performance
Goals for B/Tau working Group (2) • The main tool for b and tau identification is the tracking detector which in the CMS baseline proposal is available at trigger level >2 (all software) • Online and Offline identification will be based on precise impact parameter measurement, track isolation, track multiplicity and possibly secondary vertex reconstruction • We will therefore focus on developing expertise on track finding and vertex reconstruction algorithms
Goals for B/Tau working Group (3) • To improve event filtering at level 2.0 and larger and to develop integrated reconstruction algorithms some expertise will be shared with the other High Level Trigger (HLT) groups for muons and electrons identification • These goals will be achieved in different steps. • The first Milestone is foreseen for November 1999.
Plans for B/Tau working Group (1) • For November ‘99 milestone the btau group will study the following physic channels: • taking into account also pileup effects from minimum bias events. H, h, A t+ t- hadron+ hadron - + X 2 “tau” jet Et > 60 GeV 1 isolated hadron in narrow jet cone (0.1) pt>40 GeV Et missing > 40 GeV
Plans for B/Tau working Group (2) • To carry out these commitment a substantial effort is needed to generate the necessary software environment ( i.e. Digitization + pileup, Clusterization, Seeded Global Track Finder, Kalman Filter, Fast Vertex Finder, Global Vertex Finder, Track Muon Finder, b Tagging, long lived and conversions, Tau identification etc..)
Organization for B/Tau working Group • A. Caner (Cern) Working Group Convener • Web Page http://cmsdoc.cern.ch/Physics/btau/www/btau.html • Mailing list cms-btau@cms-lb.cern.ch • INFN Section involved (Bari, Catania, Firenze, Pisa) • Link Person with the Reconstruction Team: L. Silvestris (Infn Bari) • Meetings twice a month (with virtual room when possible)
