2-15-11 Carbon Monoxide • Hemoglobin in red blood cells is the protein that carries oxygen (O2) to all parts of the body. The reason that carbon monoxide (CO) is so dangerous to humans is that it bonds to hemoglobin more readily than oxygen does. When bonded to carbon monoxide, hemoglobin is incapable of carrying oxygen. Because carbon monoxide is colorless & odorless, it is important for homes to have carbon monoxide detectors.
