Function • transport of materials to and from the cells
Simple organisms • single celled organisms use diffusion and osmosis to obtain nutrients and get rid of waste
Complex Organisms • circulatory system brings nutrients to cells and removes waste
BLOOD • The body’s pickup and delivery system
Two Parts • 45% cells • 55% plasma
Cells • red blood cells (RBC’s) • white blood cells (WBC’s) • platelets
RBC’s • Carry oxygen • small • biconcave disks • increases surface area • contain hemoglobin ( include iron) • no nucleus • live about 120 days
WBC’s • Defend body from microorganisms • large • have nucleus • different types • live for different length of time depending on type
Platelets • help in clotting • cell fragments
Plasma • transport of nutrients, gases and waste • consists of • water - 92% • proteins • albumins - maintain osmotic pressure • globulins - immunity • fibrinogen - blood clotting
nutrients • amino acids • lipids • sugars • gases • oxygen • carbon dioxide • electrolytes • sodium, chlorine, potassium, etc. • maintain osmotic pressure & pH • metabolic waste • urea
