Aircraft Access to SWIM (AAtS) FY11 planned Demo activities
Agenda • AAtS Overview • AAtS Notional Architecture • NAS Data Elements • FY11 Activities • AAtS Aviation Outreach Study • FY12 – 13 Activities
AAtS Overview • Connect NAS services enabled by FAA’s System Wide Information Management (SWIM) to aircraft • Improve situational awareness for aircraft by facilitating dissemination of operational & supplementary NAS information via the SWIM based network • Only SWIM-enabled NAS services will be available via AAtS • Not intended for uses that will directly effect the trajectory of the aircraft • Initial AAtS Concept • Will utilize existing NAS and aircraft infrastructure • The FAA will not be acquiring a specific infrastructure to support the deployment of AAtS. • Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) used to display NAS information in aircraft (e.g., Class II PED or iPad)
Future Service Notional AAtS Architecture (initial) LEGEND Wireless transmission Dedicated telecom + VPN backup VPN via internet NAS Systems Operator (e.g., 121 transport carrier) ERAM AIM TFMS TCP/IP Capable transmission medium (VPN Continuity) CIWS TDDS Value added Service Provider (VASP) Exchange Service NESG SWIM ITWS Future Service • One way • Product based • Proprietary Value added Service Provider (VASP) Broadcast Service WMSCR Future Service
NAS Data Elements • Possible NAS Data for AAtS dissemination include: • Flight delays • Flight planning information • Alternate Routing information • Traffic management information • Airport info (e.g., runway configuration & status) • NOTAMs • Temporary flight restrictions (TFR) & special activity airspace (SAA) • Weather
FY11 AAtS Activities • Concept of Uses (ConUse) Document • AAtS Aviation Technology Study • Technical Tests & Operational Demonstration at NextGen Daytona Beach Test Bed • Developing AAtS Test Plan • System End-to-End Technical Tests • Human In The Loop (HITL) Demo • Schedule Target for 1st Demo Aug/Sep 2011 • Possible Use Case Scenarios • NOTAMs, TFRs, Weather Data • AVS and Guidance Impacts
AAtS Aviation Technology Study • Objectives • Seek input from industry on expected equipment solutions • Validate known technical issues • Identify other technical design & implementation challenges • Obtain commitments of interest & resources from aviation community to demonstrate AAtS capabilities for follow-on activities • Anticipated Participants • Operators (e.g., airlines, aviation associations, etc) • Broadband data transport service providers • Content and/or content management service providers
FY12 – 13 Activities • Iterative Testing of Ground Technology (Daytona Beach NTB) • Additional use cases, service providers, EFBs & aircraft • Operational / HITL Tests • Develop AAtS Requirements Documents • Enterprise Architecture (EA) artifacts • Rigor with SWIM / NAS architecture • Node-on-the-Net architecture • Derived Connectivity requirements • Perform Capability Analysis (lessons learned) • Develop Safety Analysis and Metrics • Conduct Operational Trials • Identify any ATC procedural & AVS policy impacts • Projected operational usage of AAtS is 1st Qtr FY14
