  1. Why the Fries Taste Good Haley, Josh, and Zac

  2. Main Ideas • J.R. Simplot: a multi-billionaire from Idaho who created The Simplot Plant, the third largest potato factory in the world • This plant is the main frozen french fry supplier for Mcdonalds and many other fast food chains • His cheap french fries changed Americans eating habits for years to come

  3. Main Ideas • Scientists believe that we developed the ability to taste as a survival technique so that we can detect poisons • Our brain stores the flavor of foods by the gases that come from the foods

  4. Main Idea • Often times, the label “Natural Flavors” is just used to comfort consumers but in actuality, sometimes artificial flavoring is actually safer than natural flavoring • Flavoring and textures can be completely manipulated by adding certain chemicals, fats, gums and other additives.

  5. Authors Purpose • The author wanted to defend frozen french fries. Even though the flavor is mostly artificial, they still taste good and aren’t necessarily bad for you. • The author made the claim that many artificial and natural flavors are made in the same factories. Some “natural flavors” even have things such as cyanide in them while artificial does not

  6. Relevance • In this day and age, Americans eat 30 pounds of frozen french fries every year, and 90% of that comes from fast food restaurants. • Just like every food, french fries can be bad for you if you eat too many, but if an individual eats them in moderation, the flavoring won’t hurt them just because it’s not necessarily natural
