In the beginning… • Home schooling was necessary in days when there weren’t many schools. Nearly all children were educated in the home or in small communities.
Compulsory education began in the late 17th –18th century. • Formal education in a classroom setting has become the most common means of education in the world.

The Response • In response to all of the literature being published at the time a number of families decided to home school their children.
Other reasons for home schooling • Strong religious convictions • Concern about the environment of local schools • Dissatisfaction with academic instruction provided in local schools
